Originally known primarily for its agricultural wealth, the Lowcountry today is renowned for its historic cities, cultural heritage, natural beauty, and expanding tourism industry.
One of the most distinctive elements of the South Carolina Lowcountry is the architecture. Lowcountry style home architecture first developed in the late 1700s, but much of the same techniques are still used in construction today as efficient design for dealing with the hot subtropical climate of the southeast. Some examples of this type of architecture include pilings, raised first floors, large windows, and usually a large central breezeway to keep cool against the high temperature climate.
